What Is Dental Imaging? CBCT & OPG Scans Explained

Dental imaging, including CBCT and OPG scans, is a vital diagnostic tool in specialist dentistry. At our Solihull-based referral centre, we offer advanced dental scans to support treatment planning for your patients. You may refer a patient for imaging if:

  • They require dental implant planning

  • There is complex root canal anatomy or retreatment

  • You suspect pathology (e.g. cysts, resorption, infection)

  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or unerupted

A CBCT scan provides high-resolution 3D images of teeth, bone, and surrounding structures, while an OPG scan gives a panoramic overview of the jaws. These imaging tools enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical confidence.

All dental scans are performed quickly and comfortably, with low-dose radiation protocols. Optional radiographic reporting is available by a consultant. Scans are shared promptly with the referring dentist, often within 24–48 hours.

The Patient Journey

At Shiraz Endodontic Practice in Solihull, we’re committed to providing a smooth and professional experience for every patient referred for a CBCT scan, OPG scan, or radiographic reporting. Here’s what you can expect when you are referred to us for dental imaging:

Before Your Dental Scan

Once your dentist refers you for a CBCT or OPG scan, our team will contact you promptly to book an appointment at our Solihull imaging centre. We’ll confirm the type of scan required, explain the process, and address any questions.
Most dental scans don’t require preparation, and appointments are typically quick and easy to arrange.

During Your Dental Scan

On the day of your appointment, our team will ensure you’re comfortable and informed. For CBCT (Cone Beam CT) scans, a 3D image of your teeth and jaws will be captured in under a minute.

For OPG (Ortho- pantomogram) scans, a panoramic 2D X-ray will be taken. The whole visit typically takes 15 minutes.

After Your Dental Imaging

There’s no recovery time needed. We’ll securely send your dental scan images to your referring dentist, and if requested, a radiographic report will be prepared by a GDC-registered dental radiologist or specialist.
Your dentist will then discuss the scan findings with you and plan any necessary treatment.

Cutting-Edge 3D Dental Imaging Solutions

At Shiraz Specialist Dental, we use state-of-the-art CBCT and OPG imaging equipment to capture highly detailed views of teeth, bone, and surrounding structures. These advanced dental scans allow our specialists and referring dentists to accurately diagnose complex conditions, plan treatments with confidence, and monitor healing with precision.

Our 3D CBCT technology provides unparalleled clarity, making it ideal for implant planning, endodontic assessment, and surgical procedures. For broader diagnostic needs, our digital panoramic (OPG) scans offer a full overview of the jaws and teeth in seconds.

This level of detail ensures we deliver precise, efficient, and safe care—every scan is a step toward better outcomes for your patients.

Are Dental Scans Safe and Comfortable?

Yes — dental scans such as CBCT and OPG are both safe and comfortable.
These scans use low-dose radiation and are carefully controlled to ensure patient safety. The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive. You’ll be asked to stay still while the scanner moves around your head — most scans take less than a minute.

There’s no need for injections or recovery time, and our friendly team will ensure you feel at ease throughout. If you have any concerns, we’re always happy to talk you through the process.

Why Has My Dentist Referred Me for a CBCT or OPG Scan?

Your dentist has referred you for a CBCT or OPG dental scan to gain a clearer and more detailed view of your teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. These advanced 2D and 3D imaging techniques provide much more information than standard X-rays, helping to identify issues such as impacted teeth, infections, bone levels, root fractures, or suitability for implants.

Our imaging experts use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure accurate, high-resolution scans in a safe and comfortable environment. This level of detail allows your dentist or dental specialist to plan treatment more effectively, increasing the chances of long-term success — whether you’re having a root canal, oral surgery, or restorative work.

Overall great experience with Dr. Nida at Shiraz Endodontics. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and explained everything clearly. She did a thorough oral examination on my molar, and I felt at ease during the consultation. The practice itself is conveniently located within Solihull, with onsite car park. I highly recommend Dr. Nida to anyone who needs an endodontist in the Midlands.
