What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an inflammation of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. The disease starts with a build-up of plaque on the teeth and gums. Over time, if the plaque isn’t removed through proper brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar and creates a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.
As these bacteria grow and multiply, they produce toxins that irritate the gums, causing inflammation and bleeding. This early stage of gum disease is commonly referred to as gingivitis. If left untreated, the inflammation can progress and cause the gums to recede, exposing the roots of the teeth leading to more severe gum disease (also known as periodontitis).
At Shiraz Endodontic Practice, we offer comprehensive periodontal exams to detect, diagnose and treat gum disease. Our experienced team of dental professionals provide a tailored treatment plan to address the specific needs of each patient.
What is Gum Disease?
There are two primary types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and is characterised by inflammation of the gums. The most common symptoms of gingivitis include redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums.
If gingivitis isn’t treated properly, it may progress to periodontitis.
Periodontitis
At Shiraz Endodontic Practice, we offer comprehensive periodontal evaluations to identify the type and severity of gum disease. Our team of experienced dental professionals will work with you to tailor a custom plan to treat, manage and control your gum disease.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
The signs and symptoms of gum disease can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms of gum disease include:
Red or swollen gums
Healthy gums should be pink and firm. A warning sign of gum disease is if they appear red, swollen, or tender to the touch.
Bad breath
Halitosis (persistent bad breath) may be a sign of gum disease that is caused by the build-up of bacteria in the mouth.
Loose teeth
Gum disease can break down the bone and tissue supporting the teeth, causing the teeth to become loose or shift in position.
Bleeding gums
Healthy gums do not typically bleed. Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing could be a sign of gum disease.
Receding gums
When gum recession occurs, pockets or gaps can form between the teeth and gum line causing a build-up of bacteria.
Changes in bite
Gum Treatment
At Shiraz Endodontic Practice in Birmingham, our team of dental professionals is highly trained in all aspects of gum disease. Our team of experts will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan to help keep your smile.
For mild cases of gum disease, our team may recommend scaling and root planing. This treatment removes plaque and tartar build-up from the teeth and gums and smooths the tooth roots preventing further bacteria build-up. For severe cases of gum disease, our team may recommend treatments such as flap surgery or bone and tissue grafts. This promotes bone and tissue regeneration.
It is important for patients to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent gum disease progression. This involves brushing twice a day, flossing daily, using interdental brushes and attending routine dental check-ups.
Prevention of Gum Disease
Prevention is always better than cure, and this holds true for gum disease as well! Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent gum disease and maintain good oral health. Here are some of our tips on how to prevent gum disease:
Practice Good Oral Hygiene
The most important step in preventing gum disease is to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing at least once a day, using interdental brushes, and using a mouthwash to kill bacteria. Yous should also use a soft-bristled toothbrush and replace the head every three to four months.

“I would like to apologise for getting a little emotional when I recently attended your practise. I was so grateful and appreciative for all your efforts and the hard work you carried out. You cannot imagine what it means to me. I would like to wish you and your team a very happy, peaceful and prosperous new year. Once again, many thanks and best wishes.”

Overall great experience with Dr. Nida at Shiraz Endodontics. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and explained everything clearly. She did a thorough oral examination on my molar, and I felt at ease during the consultation. The practice itself is conveniently located within Solihull, with onsite car park. I highly recommend Dr. Nida to anyone who needs an endodontist in the Midlands.
